In terms of research, in the Shanghai ranking that evaluates 25,000 universities in the world, the University of Bretagne Occidentale is ranked 11th, becoming the 2nd university in France and 4th in Europe in Ocean Sciences research.

The university is in the Brittany region, in the northwest of France with the main campus in the city of Brest and other campuses in Quimper, Morlaix and Plouzané. Brest is one of the largest marine research centers in the world, home to 60% of French marine researchers.
